Some brief information

Spray foam insulation is multipurpose. It can be used for insulated walls, floors or roofs. It is an extremely fast method of insulation. The added advantage of using spray foam insulation is the improved building air tightness value.  Spray foam insulation costs can be quite high. However, the speed of application can be a deciding factor in choosing this form of insulation.  Other forms of insulation such as Dry lining for roof rafters will take a lot longer to install.

Foam insulation, being in a liquid form, can be applied to the smallest of areas. It is also extremely efficient at reaching those inaccessible areas.

There are two main types of Spray Foam Insulation:

Open Cell Type - These have a very high expansion rate. This makes it ideal for home insulation purposes. The expansion rate after application is slow enough to allow all spaces to be filled. Open-cell uses water as a spraying agent. This is a built-in safety feature.

Closed Cell Type – This method has a slower rate of expansion. Closed uses chemicals as its spraying agent.

Foam insulation is applied in liquid form using a sprayer on site. This liquid hardens very quickly. The foam applicator consists of two different chemicals that are released simultaneously from two different nozzles. Upon release, they form a bond which results in an instantaneous form of the insulation material. The ratio of one constituent chemical, involved in this process, to the other is critical. Only very experienced professionals should be considered for this type of insulation process as an imbalance in chemical bonding can lead to very strong odours being introduced into your home. Rectifying this error can be extremely difficult to resolve. However, I have yet to hear of one such mishap in Ireland.
